6.1 Identify and plan professional learning needs
Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the National Professional Standards for Teachers in identifying professional learning needs.
The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers plays an important role in identifying areas in which teachers need to further develop their knowledge and skills. The standards are used to outline the different teaching levels - graduate, proficient, highly proficient and lead. These have been a very useful guide for developing my understanding of the range of aspects required to be a proficient teacher and in order to identify areas of professional learning and development in which I would benefit. I recognise the importance of continued self-development and will strive to focus on:
- Developing a broader understanding of assessment and reporting
- The importance of integrating numeracy and literacy in all subject areas and school activities
- Ways to develop good relationships with parents, and
- Develop complete and effective classroom management strategies

6.2
Engage in professional learning and improve practice
Understand the relevant and appropriate sources of professional learning for teachers.
During my placement experiences I have had the opportunity of participating in Professional Development sessions during staff meetings. At Friends’ School I took part in a workshop that focused on mental health issues which students experience in schools. It identified how teachers can be better prepared in dealing with this problem through strategies and support networks.
Through reflective practice and ongoing mentor and teacher feedback I have been able to reflect on improving my teaching skills and how I can further develop my knowledge on being an effective teacher. I have also benefited greatly through formal and informal discussions with fellow teachers on their experiences and approaches to teaching.

6.3
Engage with colleagues and improve practice
Seek and apply constructive feedback from supervisors and teachers to improve teaching practices.
It has been a wonderful experience building working relationships with mentors and work colleagues during my professional placements. Having the opportunity to work in a range of classrooms and observe a variety of teaching styles has given me valuable insights into new and creative ways of teaching. It has provided me with ongoing self-reflective practice on my beliefs and values as a future teacher.
I was very open to receiving feedback from all of my mentors on my lesson planning and presentation of lessons. The feedback was mostly comprehensive, immediate and relevant and identified my current teaching strengths and ways to improve my teaching strategies. Observational sheets such as the example provided from my prac at Richmond Primary provided valuable information I could assess and reflect on.

6.4
Apply professional learning and improve student learning
Demonstrate an understanding of the rationale for continued professional learning and the implications for improved student learning.
As a future teacher it is important to pursue ongoing self-development. Learning is a collaborative experience and teachers need to continually explore new ways of improving their teaching skills and provide students with effective learning environments by keeping in touch with the ever-changing climate of the teaching profession.
As a graduate teacher I intend to involve myself in continued self-reflective practice and professional development workshops provided by schools and the Department of Education wherever possible.
