Warburton Campus, Ngaanyatjarra Lands School
Placement 1, Years 3-6
May 2012
Warburton is situated 600km west of Uluru and is the biggest of 11 communities in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands. The school (which operates under the Western Australian Department of Education) has an enrolment of approximately 120 student and I did my first placement here in 2012 in a year 3-6 class. During the five years I lived in Warburton I spent four and a half as a Youth Worker with the Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku. This experience provided me with a great opportunity to build skills in developing rapport with young people (aged 3-25), planning activities and events to engage young people and being a mentor; all skills I believe are transferrable to being a teacher. During this placement I gained specific experience in teaching Aboriginal students, teaching students for whom English is a second language, and behavioural management. Given the very remote context, teaching in Warburton is a unique experience. For a great insight into what it is like to teach in the Ngaanyatjarra lands I highly recommend CLICKING HERE to watch a short video on current teachers' experiences.
